Not everyone is good at writing speeches, let alone public speaking. If you find yourself asked to say a speech at a wedding, and it’s for the groom, you may have a tough time. If you’re the grandmother of the groom, and you’re looking for tips on how to formulate a good speech, don’t panic. There are a few things that you can do to help you get forward progress in this regard. It all starts with a few bullet points, and the nature and glory of love.
The Introduction Always Starts Things Off
No matter how many tips you read, you’re going to find that an introduction is in order. You may know everyone, but does everyone know you? Plus, there’s no doubt going to be people from out of town, friends, and other people that are going to be at the wedding that need to be considered in your speech too. Either way, you’ll find that you will need to work with an introduction that states who you are and how you know the groom etc. Of course, this doesn’t have to be a long thing, but something that should get you to your first bullet point and forward.
Discuss How Love Changed You
Since you’re a grandmother, you’ll be able to discuss things that others won’t. Talk about how life has changed for you in regard to the love and honor that speaks volumes. Use your experience and age to talk about how marriage is hard work, but it has brought you great joy. Talk about how children made things special, and that your love for your husband grew over time. If you’re single now, or your husband died etc., just talk about the good times and don’t focus on the bad times. Focusing on the good of marriage is a great thing.
Give Some Advice
Since you’re a grandmother, you are perfect to give advice. Think about some quotes, some ideas, or a story about marriage’s tough times to help the new couple out. By simply giving them a little advice, you’re going to be able to get forward progress with your speech, and will have more ideas as to what you want to say and how to frame it. Give some advice, and you’ll see that your speech will be well received, and easy to say when it’s time to speak in front of the crowd.
Closing Statements
When you’re ready to close things up, simply thank people for coming. Talk about how much of a blessing the groom has been to you, and how much you love him. Then talk about the bride and say how beautiful she looks, and how you’re glad that they’re together. Also, make a quick note about how you would love great grandchildren, and wink, as you sit down. This is going to be received with a chuckle, some smiles, and a great applause. That’s it. There are your few points to consider, and could very well give you a great momentum forward in writing a speech.
